5 Reliable Places to Find Genealogists Online
Now that you’ve decided that you need a genealogist to help you with your ancestors. Where do you find one? Do you Google them? Do you find one that’s in your local area or one that’s from a major genealogical website? In this post, I’ll share some online places where genealogists like to hang out.
Ancestry or AncestryPro Genealogists
This is a great place to start because these professionals work with you on Ancestry to break through your brick wall. They can be more expensive than freelancers, but the result can be worth it. Ancestry has a button on their website that takes you to there professional genealogist page where you can browse before buying their services.
Association of Professional Genealogists
Or apg, again, this is another awesome website that has gathered professionals to one place for your convenience. They cover a variety of topics including African American, Jewish, and American Indian heritage.
ThumbTack
This is another location for looking for professionals. You can search locally or as far as you need. These are mainly freelancers with their own businesses so if that’s what you’re looking for, then I would start here.
Research Firms
Such as Legacy Tree, Record Click, and Trace all started as freelancers who gathered together to make their own research firm. These are just a few that are out there, but that’s the main point of their business. They are still held to genealogy codes and ethics, but they are not funded by Ancestry or Family Search or to the Association of Professional Genealogists.
Cyndi’s List
This is another spot where someone has gathered professionals from all over the Internet and brought them into one place. This site is strictly where to find professionals and not their home website.
Conclusion
These are just a few of the many places that you can find genealogists that fit your research, your ancestors, and your lifestyle. The point is that we make it harder on ourselves when we put limits on hiring a professional. I truly believe that there is a professional genealogist for every budget and every lifestyle. But it’s up to us to take that step into the unknown and get some traction on our genealogy research.
So put down your reservations and give a genealogist a try.
And as always…good luck and happy hunting!
