7 Simple Genealogy Projects for February

Do you need some genealogy projects for this month? Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and you want to make it meaningful, but don’t know how? I share some ideas that you can not only do for Valentine’s Day, but for the whole month. So let’s get started!

Plan Genealogy Travel

February is ideal for planning trips big and small. I know with COVID still going strong in some areas, the temptation to travel is less this year. However, it still helps to plan whether you go this year or the next. Research different areas you would want to go either on a family history trip or on a family trip. This activity will also lift your spirits as the winter days drag on.

Create a special dinner night

Genealogy projects don’t have to be about dry papers. Do you have any family recipes passed down from your ancestors? Or if you don’t, then does your family have a favorite meal that they love? Then pick a night other than Valentine’s day to make a dinner to honor your ancestors and your current family. I prefer not doing this on Valentine’s because that holiday is so crazy that it doesn’t need more to make it special. However, picking another night to honor an ancestor or someone in your family can be a fun tradition for this month.

Photo Stories for Genealogy Projects

Take five different photos and write the story behind each one. Then you can save it to your computer, share it with family, or upload it to your favorite online genealogy website, such as FamilySearch.com. This is a favorite activity of mine because it helps me see the fun of genealogy again after researching for long periods.

Couple’s Love Stories for Genealogy Projects

Call your relatives to ask them about how they met their spouse and what their love story is all about. This helps you connect with your current relatives while also doing genealogy. If you want to preserve these conversations, then I would recommend a phone recording app such as Cube to help you record them. It saves the conversations on your phone. Then I would write up the story in my computer so it would be saved in another place.

Document Love Stories

Do you have love letters that your ancestors wrote to each other? How about your current family? If so, are they preserved? Go back and read them this month to see how they showed their love for each other. Then if you want to preserve them better, you can use Becky Higgins Project Life App or any of her physical products or just use a regular binder with sheet protectors to store them. Also, if you have photos to put with these love stories, then it would make them even more personal.

Organize Your Genealogy for Your Genealogy Projects

Why not take these winter days to organize something in your genealogy. It could be your papers, computer files, photos, or stories. Just pick one area that you want to work on for this month. Sometimes, I like to organize my genealogy plans for the year during this time. That way I don’t feel overwhelmed with a lot of projects demanding my attention all at once. This month, I’m organizing a photo album that has been long overdue for an overhaul. I’m including stories along with the photos to have a more complete event. I’m loving it!

Research Your Immigrant Ancestors

Want to connect better with your immigrant ancestors? Then this month is great for that because February is all about love and connecting. Just pick one ancestor that you want to know more about and let the curiosity fly! This is a great time to learn about their culture, traditions, beliefs, and life so that you can connect with them. If you don’t want to do that for an ancestor, then how about a living relative that you want to better connect with. Research different ways that you can learn about them and want to be closer with them.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the ways that we can connect this month with our ancestors and living relatives. The point is to make this month a special one by doing meaningful things for yourself and others. In this way, you can build stronger relationships and love.
