RootsTech Connect and 4 Valuable Classes from it

Do you want to learn more about genealogy by taking classes? It’s challenging to find the right fit for your time and budget. But at Family Search you get a link to RootsTech Connect, which is the virtual platform for RootsTech 2021. They held the official event in February, but you can still watch classes on a variety of subjects either by going there directly or by following the link on the Family Search homepage. The classes are free so you can enjoy them anytime it fits into your summer schedule.

Some of my favorite classes at RootsTech Connect

How to Storyboard: A Template for Compelling True Stories

This class talks about how to take a true family history story and find the hero, the problem, and the solution with many details thrown in. It’s the classic storytelling structure that we all love. She breaks it down into manageable steps and shows us that this method can be used for writing a short story or a biography. It was a very inspiring class!

20 Kid Friendly Family History Activity Ideas in 20 Minutes

I loved this one because it had both virtual ideas and non virtual ideas. If you’re looking for some simple ideas, then this class is for you. The teacher is a professional genealogist and a mom of seven kids so she know both the genealogy industry and the family scene. Some of her ideas that I liked are making family history home videos and sharing it on YouTube, recreate ancestor’s family photos, and build your ancestor’s world. I was reminded again at how easy it is to do family history.

21st Century Tools for Connecting with Your Family

We learned a lot from last year about connecting virtually and this class shows two tools on how to do that with extended family. The teacher used Google Photos and What’sApp to show how his family connected over three generations and across states. At first, he had a slow start, but he persisted until his family saw the benefits of having this tech in their lives.

Laughter and Love: Using Virtual Reunions to Reconnect Your Family

Another favorite of mine! I loved how they tried something new to keep their family reunion tradition going even during the pandemic. They explain what went well and what was challenging as they navigated a virtual family reunion.
