Free Genealogy Websites that I Use and Love

We all love something that’s free, right? My husband is famous for saying, “If it’s free, it’s for me!” This is also the case for free genealogy websites. We are all looking for more free websites that will get us the genealogy information or record that we need. Therefore, I compiled a list of some of the free websites that I use. Although most of these websites are well known, I hope you take full advantage of them in your research. There’s more to learn about them!

Free Genealogy Website #1

I chose to list my top favorite free website as FamilySearch.org. This is by far the workhorse of my genealogy research business. I use it and love it so much! I’m not going into too much detail about this website because I think everybody who is in the genealogy industry knows about this website. I also think that this website needs it’s own blog post in order to do it justice. However, you can go here to one of my blog posts that talks in more detail about how to search on this website and on Ancestry.com.

Website #2

Findagrave.com is fantastic if you’re looking for headstones, cemeteries, and even obituaries for your ancestors. Sometimes, people find obituaries and don’t know where to put them. Therefore, they attach them to the person’s headstone and make a little memorial for them. The website also links family members together. I have found whole families on this website that I then verify with original vital records. It’s fantastic!

Website #3

Norway’s National Digital Archives is the best free website for finding Norwegian ancestors! It has given me so much of my ancestors that I cant’ believe it’s free! I have literally found 4 generations of full families just by using this website. I can’t sing it’s praises enough. I have written many blog posts about how to use this website. I wrote this one about searching for birth records and this one for census records. In addition, this blog post tells about more of the websites that I use although some of them are paid sites.

Website #4

Danish National Archives is also another free website that I absolutely love! I wrote a blog post about the top Danish websites that I use and love here. So go check those out! Again, this is another website that gives so much and asks for nothing in return.

Free Genealogy Website #5

Swedish National Archives is another free website. They, of course, don’t just do genealogy, but they house many of the government records. However, they do have a whole section devoted to genealogy users . I have found original records using this site.

Free genealogy websites are an amazing resource to have in this day and age. I’m very thankful to have access to so much free material. It makes my life easier! Again, these are just a few of the websites that I use in my business. I live and breathe this stuff! If you are stuck using any of these American or Scandinavian websites, then I would be happy to help you in a free 30 minute consultation.

In the meantime…good luck and happy hunting!
