Hi friends, I hope you enjoyed last week’s blog about finding your ancestor in census records. I know I didn’t go too in depth with them because there’s just too much to cover in one post.  However, if you want to learn more, just email me or comment below and I can answer in detail.
So, let’s move on with our search. I left off with finding Johanna in the 1930 census. However, there are more censuses to look at when searching for an ancestor.  You want to look in EVERY census that they lived in America. With that said, I couldn’t find her in the 1920 census even though she immigrated in 1913 and should have shown up on that one.  I still have to try different name variations or different filters to try to find her.  There is also the very real possibility that she wasn’t recorded in 1920 for some reason. I also did not find her in 1940.  I found out later on her death certificate that she had died in 1935.  We will talk about that later.
I decided to see if I could find any immigration records for her since I knew her approximate immigration year.  I went back on Ancestry.com under the search tab, then under the immigration and travel tab.  I entered her name, birthplace, and arrival date. I came up with many records that took time searching to find the right one or a close match to the information I already knew about her.
Here is what I found that matched the closest with her immigration date.
Sorry about the quality of this image, anyway this is a passenger list of people coming from Canada and entering the U.S. by way of Vermont. So let’s go through what each column shows. These column titles are shown horizontal along the top of the document; however, it’s easier to show them vertical in this table.  Johanna’s information is on the right.

When I first found this document, I didn’t know if this was the right Johanna. I didn’t know her middle name, her birth year from the 1930 census said she was born around 1894 and this record says she was born around 1892, and all the rest of the information was new to me.  I couldn’t match it with any other record at the time. I had to see if I could find other American documents that would verify what this document said.
And that will be another discussion for another day…
Happy Hunting
