Research Dagfin Noren

Research Objective

To find as much information as I can about Dagfin Noren and his Norwegian and Swedish ancestors.

Background Information

We know from previous research that Dagfin was born in Kampen District, Kristiania(Oslo), Norway 27 Dec 1898 . His birth record verifies this place and date. He died 13 June 1956 . According to his birth record and client information, his parents are Bent Johan Danielsen born 1874 in Hakadal, Akershus, Norway and Karen Hansen born 1874 in Hakadal, Akershus, Norway. Birth records confirm Bent Johan’s birth date and place. Dagfin’s birth record also indicates that Bent Johan and Karen were not married when Dagfin was born.

Norway’s 1875 and 1891 census records show that Bent Johan had five siblings. They will be discussed in the following section. From the 1875 and 1891 censuses, the parents of Bent Johan Danielsen are Daniel Bryntesen Noren born 1839 in Skillingsmark, Sweden and Anne Jensdatter born 1842 in Jernsko, Sweden.

According to Norwegian farm books , they moved their family from Sweden to Hakadal, Norway in 1869. Renting a small farm until 1900 when censuses indicate that they moved to Oslo, Norway. The farm books show two of Bent Johan’s sisters, Anna and Hilda, marrying within Hakadal Parish and one brother, Gustav, dying in the same Parish . All of this has been verified with marriage records and death records. Further information will be discussed in the following section.

Research Results

According to the records, Dagfin’s paternal ancestors come from Hakadal Parish, Akershus County, Norway and Skillingsmark Parish and Järnskog Parish, Värmland County, Sweden. The following images show these places on the map.

The first two images show Akershus county of Norway in red and Hakadal Parish in the light blue color in the second image. The second two images show Varmland County, Sweden in red and with Järnskog Parish showing number 24 on the map and Skillingsmark Parish number 25 on the parish map.

Dagfin’s family dynamics are best shown using the following table.

Currently, there are no known siblings for Dagfin according to the records. However, no record states that he is an only child and client information implies that he had siblings. Therefore, further research is needed to find any siblings for Dagfin.

The focus of this research session was on Dagfin’s paternal ancestors. Dagfin’s birth record shows his father as Bernt Johan Danielsen Norren. Norway’s naming custom was to have the child’s surname be created from the father’s first name. In this case, we know just by looking at Bernt Johan’s surname that his father’s first name would be Daniel. In looking for

Bernt Johan’s birth record, I searched the records in Hakadal Parish with the father’s first name as Daniel. Bernt Johan’s birth record was found using the father’s first name of Daniel and the unique surname of Norren. The record shows he was born 16 January 1874 in Kirkibeyeit farm, Hakadal Parish, Akershus, Norway . His parents are Daniel Bryntesen Norren and Anna Jansdatter. His father is 35 years old, which would put his birth date around 1839 and his mother is 33 years old, which would put her birth year around 1841. The record also states that the couple has been married for 5 years putting their marriage date around 1869. This record led to the rest of the family in Norway’s census records, Norway birth records, and Swedish birth records.

The table below shows Bernt Johan’s family dynamics using Norway’s 1875 and 1891 census records, individual Swedish and Norwegian birth records, and Norwegian farm books.

Jansdatter an unmarried woman living as a lodger in Hogsater, Skillingsmark, Sweden. She is living with her illegitimate daughter, Anna Danielsdatter. Because her daughter has the surname of Danielsdatter, it shows that Daniel is her father. The record shows Anna Jansdatter was born 3 August 1843 in Jernsko, Sweden. Her daughter Anna was born 13 May 1865 in Skillingsmark, Sweden. This matches the household record about Daniel and birth records of Daniel and Anna’s future children. It also matches the 1875 Norway census and the farm book for family connections and birth information.

Anna Jansdatter’s birth record confirms the household record for birth information . From her birth record, Anna Jansdatter’s parents are Jan Ersson and Gunila Nilsdatter. In addition, Anna’s daughter, Anna’s, birth record confirms her information on the household record.

Daniel Bryntesen’s birth record shows he was born 12 August 1839 in Hogsater farm, Skilllingsmark , Sweden. His parents are Brynt Ericksen and Anna Andersdatter. Again, this matches what was found in Daniel’s household record, censuses, and farm book. This led to finding the household records for Brynt Ericksen and Anna Andersdatter around Daniel’s birth year of 1839.

Brynt and Anna’s household record from 1841-1847 show the family dynamics . They are as follows:

The household record doesn’t make Anna and her children’s birthplaces clear. The record shows the mark for “ditto” for their birthplaces. This indicates that they may have been born in Norway like Brynt or they may have been born in Hogsater, Skillingsmark, Sweden. However, Daniel Bryntesen’s birth record shows that he was born in Hogsater, Skillingsmark, Sweden. Therefore, it’s likely that his siblings were also born there.

Conclusion

Many records show the family dynamics of Dagfin Norren’s paternal ancestors for three generations. Norwegian farm books, Norway censuses, Swedish church records, and Swedish household records all played a part in determining the family connections. This research session was very successful in furthering Dagfin’s ancestors. However, further research is needed to clear up some details. They are listed below.
